Conrad the Sailor (1942)
Conrad the Sailor Review
Conrad the Sailor is a 1942 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very strong flick.
This short follows Conrad the Cat on the ship, mopping it. There, Daffy Duck starts and continues to harass him throughout the cartoon. That means that this is the return to those Daffy Duck cartoons where he torments the hell out of the other guy. Even though this short is never truly hilarious as the duck could have been better and Conrad himself is just okay, it’s still a rather good, fun short.
I particularly liked the recurring gag with the captain. That is the funniest part of this entire film. I did like the interactions between the two and although not amazing, Daffy still has a couple of killer lines here. The animation and dialogue are good and the action sequences I found particularly well executed. Finally, we got a faster paced Merry Melody.
Conrad the Sailor definitely has its problems, but it’s still a lot of fun watching Daffy harass the poor ship guy through a couple of great action scenes.
