The Band Concert (1935)
The Band Concert Review
The Band Concert is a 1935 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a great entry.
This flick is famous for being the first ever color Mickey Mouse film and it’s considered to be one of the greatest animated shorts of all time. I wouldn’t personally consider it that amazing as it needed a stronger humor, but still it is pretty much the best concert type cartoon I’ve seen so far, there’s no doubt about it. The gang organizes the concert here, but Donald Duck disrupts them. Eventually even the storm does not manage to interrupt their playing the instruments.
I found the music perfectly incorporated into the animation. They simply flow seamlessly so Disney had already set the stage here for future ‘Fantasia’. I loved the classic music and how the instruments were crucial to the story, but also the animation is simply phenomenal, gorgeous, polished and particularly pleasing to watch. For the first ever color cartoon, it looks great and it pleasantly reminded me of Silly Symphonies. Mickey is great, but Donald is the funny MVP here.
The Band Concert is gorgeously animated, perfectly scored and with strong characterization leading to one of the series’ best entries so far.
