Hiawatha’s Rabbit Hunt (1941)
Hiawatha’s Rabbit Hunt Review
Hiawatha’s Rabbit Hunt is a 1941 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a such a good short.
Hiawatha who is a famous Native American character gets his Merry Melodies treatment as he tries to hunt a rabbit, but of course Bugs Bunny makes a fool of the guy. Finally Bugs returns and in glorious fashion as this is one very funny cartoon. What I found problematic was the ending which was okay, but certainly not as good as the rest of the film and it needed to have been funnier.
Hiawatha is quite well imagined with a fine design to him and a very good voice. Certainly Bugs Bunny continues to change appearances in a bothersome fashion, but at least his personality is spot-on. Here he screws with Hiawatha in such a funny way and that makes the film continually entertaining. One of the highlights includes that classic stew brewing sequence. I also loved the cliff scene which showed perfectly just how clever this rabbit can be.
Hiawatha’s Rabbit Hunt definitely has a weaker ending, but a couple of fantastic scenes accompanied by good animation and excellent characterization.
