Stage Fright (1940)
Stage Fright Review
Stage Fright is a 1940 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a highly flawed entry.
This cartoon features the Curious Puppies. These two are, as the title suggests, very curious as they explore their environment mostly in search for bones. They are very cute and endearing. This time, the environment is apparently the circus where we got a seal and one very interesting bird. Now the seal is more forgettable whereas the bird is quite memorable and amusing, but way too rehashed and similar to the Mynah bird.
Stage Fright has that very strong, memorable musical cue when the bird goes out of his hat. That was good, but otherwise the film is not fun at all despite it having some very amusing scenes. That is because the tone of the film is very uncartoony and overly serious and thus the movie suffered as a result. It is so slowly paced that it gets to be very boring for its somewhat long runtime. The animation is terrific though.
Stage Fright is overly slow and although amusing at times and very well scored and animated, it is too boring and serious to be enjoyed more.
