Mickey’s Gala Premier (1933)
Mickey’s Gala Premier Review
Mickey’s Gala Premier is a 1933 Mickey Mouse cartoon. It is a superb entry.
This is the first Mickey Mouse short to actually feature not only humans, but also celebrities being a celebrity parody throughout. It isn’t as great as amazing celebrity parodies such as ‘Mother Goose Goes Hollywood’, but it’s certainly one groundbreaking film as it is one of the earlier examples of such an experiment. Although it isn’t truly hilarious and I did not recognize each and every actor, most I did recognize and most of the gags worked.
In the film, an audience full of celebrities is shown a Mickey Mouse short which is actually a new, original short and not a previous one in the series. The cartoon is basically a parody of ‘The Cactus Kid’ with a sillier approach in its action execution. But the highlight is seeing various famous actors and actresses react to the short and laugh out loud. The highlights were Boris Karloff and his horror peers, ridiculed, large-eared Clark Gable and of course Mae West and Greta Garbo who kisses Mickey and it’s all revealed to be a wet dream in that amusing finale.
Mickey’s Gala Premier isn’t hilarious, but it’s a very strong early celebrity parody with memorable actors and many fun scenes.
