Phantom Thread Movie Review
Phantom Thread is a 2017 period drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps. It is such a bad movie.

Confession time: I really dislike Paul Thomas Anderson and this is another one of his films which I really found annoying and just bad overall. Needless to say, it is the most overrated film of the year and I would even say that it’s the worst film I’ve seen in all of 2017. That’s how bad it is.
So why do I hate it so much? One reason is the plot which is ludicrous by all means. So basically we have this romantic relationship between two highly different people in the couture world of 1954. Why they stayed together is beyond me as their relationship obviously does not work.
But the twist is that he has been sick because she has been poisoning him all along to make him vulnerable and another twist is that he had known it all along and he likes to be the victim. Yes, let that sink in for a second. Maybe there are people like him in this world, but I highly doubt it as his character and motivations are just so unlikely and difficult to grasp and she is such a cartoony villain that it was difficult to follow both of them.

So the twist is horrible and honestly quite stupid. The characters are incredibly unlikable and not deep at all and his sister is also a throwaway character. But there is only one good thing in this film apart from the costumes and solid score and that is of course the performances.
Yes, Lesley Manville and Daniel-Day Lewis are definitely good in their roles, but they both pale in comparison to Vicky Krieps’ work here. She steals the show and is basically the protagonist of this film. Her performance is terrific for such an unknown actress and she is the only reason to see this total bore of a film which basically has two thirds of filler where nothing happens at all and then the last act is pointless, twisty and soapy nonsense with no point or message to be found anywhere. None of its six Oscar nominations was thus earned.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread is yet another overrated film from one highly overrated director. I’ve never got the appeal of his films and I just never will. This film is basically two acts of slow, uninteresting drama and one final act of ludicrous, horrible twist which makes no sense and has no message to present whatsoever. The only reason to see this pointless bore is because of Vicky Krieps whose performance is actually much better than the ones from Daniel-Day Lewis and Lesley Manville and thus the Academy’s choice to nominate the latter two over her is ridiculous. But other than her, this is a giant waste of time and there is no doubt in my mind that this is the worst film of the year.
