Tom Thumb in Trouble (1940)
Tom Thumb in Trouble Review
Tom Thumb in Trouble is a 1940 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is a very good entry.
This film features Tom Thumb and his giant father. When he goes to search for the bird, his father worries but eventually everything turns out alright. This is a fairy tale, but actually a more serious, more dramatized and somewhat darker version. That sets it apart not only from Disney cartoons, but most especially from Warner Bros. usual comedy-heavy output. Sniffles Takes a Trip is the only entry that is similar to this one in tone.
Now obviously the film lacks in energy as it is very slow and it is definitely too long. The characterization should have been stronger too. But the score is very good, the atmosphere is palpable and the animation is simply outstanding as the characters look and act real, they convey emotion beautifully and the imagery is also frequently stunning.
Tom Thumb in Trouble is long and serious, but artistically competent as its animation and atmosphere are magnificently conveyed.
My Rating – 4
